Theranostics: How Modern Medicine Finds and Treats Cancer in One Approach
Imagine a treatment that first sees the cancer in your body and then attacks it with remarkable accuracy. This is the promise of theranostics, one of the most exciting advances in cancer care today.
The word “theranostics” consists of therapy and diagnostics. In simple terms, it means doctors use a special medicine that can both locate cancer cells and deliver treatment directly to them.

How Does Theranostics Work?
Cancer cells often have unique “locks” (proteins or receptors) on their surface. Scientists have designed “keys”, special molecules that fit only those locks.
- The Diagnostic Step
Doctors attach a tiny radioactive tracer to the key and inject it into the body. A PET scan is then performed. Wherever the cancer cells are, they light up on the scan. This shows exactly where the disease is and confirms that the target is present. - The Treatment Step
Once the scan confirms the target, doctors attach the same key to a stronger radioactive substance. This medicine travels through the bloodstream, locks onto the cancer cells, and delivers radiation from the inside, damaging the cancer while largely sparing healthy tissue. (DMS Health)
The guiding principle is simple and powerful: “See what you treat, and treat what you see.”

Why It Matters
Traditional treatments such as chemotherapy or external radiation affect the whole body or a larger area. Theranostics is more precise. It is especially valuable for cancers that have spread (metastatic disease) because the medicine can reach cancer cells wherever they blfx.
Common examples of theranostics in use today include:
- Lutetium-177 therapy for advanced prostate cancer
- Radioiodine therapy for thyroid cancer
- Treatments for certain neuroendocrine tumours
Theranostics represents a shift toward true precision medicine. Care that is tailored to the unique biology of each patient’s cancer.
In the next part of this series, we will look at how this advanced treatment is now available in Kenya at HCG Cancer Centre, what that means for patients and families, and how to schedule an appointment for it.
